After you have selected a compost bin and the ingredients that go into the compost pile (i.e. greens and browns), you need to select a location for your bin and dump the ingredients inside, and then of course, WAIT! Great tips on location and ratio of ingredients are provided in the following video.
Step #3: Bin Location & Final Tips
As was mentioned in the video, select a location that is in the shade and at the top of a slope if there is one. The shade is a good location since most of the plants in the garden will not grow well in shade. The uphill end of a slope is good since compost is denser and heavier than the ingredients and so you would much rather be moving the finished compost downhill.
Strive for an ideal ratio of twice the amount of browns to greens and to layer them like lasagna. Finally if you would like to speed up the composting process you can mix the ingredients once or twice every few weeks to bring additional air into the mixture. Remember to also cut everything into small pieces if you want to quicken the process. One suggestion I received regarding egg shells, for example, is to rinse out the inside of the shells and then place them in a slightly warmed oven to dry them out and make them more brittle.
Helpful Hint
Locate your compost bin in as ideal of a spot as possible and begin to add ingredients in a 2:1 ratio. Stir often and hopefully after several months you will begin to see the results of your labors. Good luck!
