A home energy checkup is a great way to learn about your home's energy efficiency and begin saving energy immediately, and the best part is that it is free. Most energy companies, as a part of their services to customers, provide a way to perform a quick home energy assessment at no charge to help you reduce energy use and save money. Using Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) as an example, a certified energy efficiency professional will come to your house and do a 1-hour walkthrough, during which (according to their website) they will perform the following tasks.

1) Assess the condition of the following items:

  • Insulation

  • Heating & cooling systems

  • Lighting

  • Water heating equipment

  • Air leaks

  • Windows & doors

  • Appliances

2) Install any of the following energy-saving products:

  • LED bulbs

  • Smart thermostats

  • Faucet aerators & low-flow showerheads

  • Insulation for water heater pipes

  • Door sweeps

  • Weatherstripping

3) Send a follow up report recommending various energy-saving improvements.

Other energy companies will have slightly different setups regarding a home energy checkup. You will need to look on your electric utility's website or contact them directly to know what resources are available.

Helpful Hint

Make an appointment with your electric utility for a free home energy checkup and take advantage of as many energy-saving products as they offer. Check their website or call directly to schedule.
